As the dust settles on a successful, but often over-subscribed Burgundy 2020 En Primeur campaign, we wanted to highlight some excellent whites from the 2019 vintage. Having suggested a number of the wines below to clients that were unable to secure their full 2020 allocation, it illustrated to us that 2019 seems to be an excellent buy across the board. With our stocks looking healthy currently and the well-advertised shortages to come in 2021, we feel that stocking up on white Burgundy from 2019, and 2020, is a very wise move.
As a vintage, 2019 was one that produced whites of impressive intensity and vibrancy. Although not as sunny as 2020, it was still a vintage where heat played a factor, resulting in low yields and bunches with small, super concentrated berries. Frost was a concern, but the majority of the producers were able to combat this effectively. Stylistically, the whites are compelling wines of striking concentration and have drawn comparisons with the 2017 and 2012 vintages, which is certainly not a bad thing!
Having looked through our stocks, I have picked out some highlights. From the excellent village Puligny’s from Bachelet-Monnot to a wide range of 1er Crus from different villages across the region, there is something here for everyone.
