Domaine Jean et Gilles Lafouge, a Latimer favourite that still remains excellent value.

Lafouge

Since the 2017 vintage, we have been lucky enough to be able to import the wines from Domaine Jean & Gilles Lafouge and offer them to our clients. Such is their quality across the board, there was instantly a positive response to these excellent wines and a loyal following has quickly emerged.

The last 18 months has seen an extraordinary rise in demand and pricing for White Burgundy. As a business, we are not able to buy enough to satisfy our client’s thirst. The reason for this increase is in part due to short harvests, with frost, hail and drought all playing their part. Alongside this, demand has risen from new and emerging markets.

With this background, it is unusual to be able to offer some truly excellent whites from the very heart of the Côte de Beaune which also offer exceptional value. With prices seemingly on an inexorable rise the offer below makes a refreshing change and comes with absolute confidence in the quality and enjoyment the wines will provide.

Having grown our allocation, today I am pleased to present a selection of Auxey-Duresses and Meursault whites from the much-hyped 2019 (which are available for immediate delivery) and 2020 (due to arrive late 2022 early 2023) vintages.

William Kelley of The Wine Advocate has been repeatedly impressed tasting at Domaine Lafouge, noting:

“I've sung the praises of this 10-hectare domaine in the past, and I continue to admire its wines. As I've written before, Domaine Jean et Gilles Lafouge produces a range of impressively consistent and compelling wines from some ten hectares spread across the appellations of Auxey-Duresses, Meursault and Pommard, and it numbers among my favourite insider domaines in Burgundy.

Old vines, cultivated soils and classical winemaking are the rudiments of Gilles Lafouge's recipe for success. The clean and organized cuverie and cellar immediately communicate a sense of dedication and attention to detail that comes across just as strongly in the glass. Their range of Auxey-Duresses red and white wines demonstrate what these terroirs can deliver when given the same treatment as more glamorous appellations, and they develop beautifully in bottle.”

The Village

Auxey-Duresses has now lost the tag of a lesser appellation and consistently produces wines of impressive quality. With Lafouge’s focus on terroir and vineyard management, we feel they produce some of the very best Auxey-Duresses on offer. Their Meursault holdings are also not to be ignored, with their winemaking talents shining through.

‘Now that the whites of St-Aubin have gained first division status, those from Auxey are becoming more popular, known for delivering good quality at reasonable prices. These are in fact from the village vineyards on the hillside facing the premier crus. This is a direct continuation from Meursault (Vireuils, Luchets, Meix Chavaux), but by now the hillside has twisted round so that the Auxey vines are more exposed to the north – a good site for whites, nonetheless. Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy, 2nd Edition

The Vintages

The 2020 whites are particularly successful. They have the concentration of 2019 with the acidity and freshness of 2017, which is a winning combination. Here the wines have excellent depth and purity, and this is exemplified with Lafouge’s offerings. Prominent Burgundy critic, Allen Meadows, went as far to say that he was “very impressed with the quality achieved here”, rating all the whites on offer “outstanding”. The Meursault 'Meix Chavaux' and ‘Les Hautés’ should not be missed.

2019 was one that produced whites of impressive intensity and vibrancy. Although not as sunny as 2020, it was still a vintage where heat played a factor, resulting in low yields and bunches with small, super concentrated berries. Frost was a concern, but the majority of the producers were able to combat this effectively. The 2019 vintage has now arrived at our warehouse and is therefore available for immediate delivery. Consider the ‘Les Boutonniers’ and Meursault in my opinion.
