We visited Piedmont in the Spring of this year hoping to find some exciting new producers for our Portfolio. One of the standout discoveries of the visit were the brilliant wines from Cecilia Monte. Cecilia’s Family estate sits at the Northern end of Barbaresco at 300m above sea level with an extraordinarily beautiful view of the Serracapelli vineyard. The higher altitude and very calciferous, fast draining soils mean that the wines here are characterised by elegance rather than power and structure. This style is also a reflection of Cecilia’s own philosophy, believing that much of the work to make great wine is done in the vineyard rather than the cellar.
There are two single Vineyard sites; Serracapelli (next to the house) and San Giuliano (located at lower altitude and further South), some delicious Langhe Nebbiolo from younger vines and a fresh crisp Dolcetto. In great years Cecilia produces a reserve cuvee from Serracapelli, ‘Dedicato a Paolo’, which is named after her father and is taken from a parcel of old vines that he identified as the best in the vineyard. Alongside the reds there is also a delicious white made from 100% Viognier, which is deliciously crisp and refreshing with a lovely weight and balance.
Cecilia is one of the few women to run and own an estate in Piedmont and visiting her was a truly refreshing experience. Her passion and understanding for the vineyards and the wines, honed over 20 years at her own estate and prior to that under the expert tutelage of Paolo Sandrone, show in every wine we tasted. The whole range is characterised by balance, freshness and elegance while retaining the essence of the grape variety and the sites on which they were grown. We are so delighted that Cecilia has chosen to work with us for the UK market and we are excited to be able to offer these fabulous wines which we are sure you will enjoy as much as we do.
Please see our offer below and do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions on the wines or if you would like to order a case or two for your cellar.
