Aromas of wild berries, plums, dried flowers and a judicious framing of new wood introduce the 2017 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru, a medium-bodied wine with a crunchy core of fruit, tangy acids and chewy tannins.
Like the 2006, this is presently brooding and even more backward with only grudging and very ripe notes of plum, spice and earth in evidence where the earthy character can also be found on the textured, velvety and mouth coating full-bodied flavors blessed by superb depth of material and so much dry
Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux offers a pleasant marine influence on the nose with touches of iodine and seaweed infusing the dark black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm but not austere tannins.
Bursting with aromas of raspberries, cherries, spices and rose petals, the 2018 Volnay Village is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and energetic, with powdery tannins and a bright core of fruit. This is an elegant, expressive wine that`s shaping up beautifully.
The 2017 Volnay Les Frémiets 1er Cru has an elegant bouquet of pure wild strawberry, cranberry, rose petal and crushed stone aromas, beautifully defined and focused. The palate, like the nose, reminds more of the elegance of Marquis d’Angerville (visited prior to my visit at Comte Armand).
